Busy Bee Meets Boss Babes Part 13. Remy Thompson!

Hi busy bees,

Some of you may know but I am in the middle of a job transition right now! I accepted my dream job as a reading specialist and have started this week! It's been very emotional and bittersweet to leave my classroom, and again, step outside my comfort zone to a new job. But I couldn't be more excited for this new change, and to work with students across all grade levels, and teachers. I'm excited to share more with you in the next few weeks about all these changes, but for now, I'm excited to bring another boss babe to the blog!

I never imagined I would feature so many AMAZING women  on the blog when I launched my business over the Summer. I wanted a way to connect with other female entrepreneurs, but it's gone farther than I could've imagined! I only knew 3/4 of these boss babes when I started this series, so it's been an amazing way for me to connect with women in a similar boat as me.

These posts are created to support female entrepreneurs, inspire my readers, and also learn from each of their stories. This boss babe is the second photographer I've had on the blog, and she actually did headshots for me back in August!

I'm SO excited to introduce:

Remy Thompson!!!

Remy is a wife, business owner and photographer with Remy Thompson Photography. Her positive energy and passion for what she does is evident in her work. She is such a light and beauty and I am so excited to have her on the blog this week.

I connected with Remy when I was looking for an RVA photographer for my headshots. I fell in love with her personal branding and knew she had the "style" of photography I was looking for. I was so nervous about taking my pictures; we were down at Belle Isle and there were a million people around. When I saw Remy, she immediately put me at ease with her big smile and contagious laugh! The session was fun and I think we both walked away feeling like we had made a friend. Remy and I will be partnering up for some big things here soon (keep an eye out!) and I'm honored to know her and be part of her journey!

Let's get started! Meet Remy:

Hi friends!! I am a Wedding and Portrait Photographer traveling the East Coast!

I was raised in Midlothian, VA, graduated from East Carolina University, and found love during my summer internship on Hatteras Island.

I’m now a (dog)mama to my puppy-monkey-baby, Behr, and a wife to my best friend, Eli. I believe that family is a major priority, accomplishments should be celebrated, and giving is the secret to happiness.

I feel that to love is to serve, and that every special moment should be captured.

I’m most likely always wearing pink, eating pizza, treating myself to a white chocolate mocha, picking flowers, and adventuring with my hubby!

Tell us about your amazing business!

I began my journey as a photographer shortly after I graduated from ECU in 2014. Through years of progressive experience working in the wedding industry, I learned a lot about myself and found my true calling. I learned about my love for serving others, and that’s why I think I was called to study hospitality management in college. My heart is anchored into this industry and I want to use what I know to spread love and light to the world.

Ultimately, I feel that light shining through the most when I am photographing and celebrating with my clients. My mission as a photographer is to make my clients feel beautiful, feel alive, and feel LOVED.

I pursued this dream full-time only a year ago. It was an opportunity for me to push myself into something I knew I could succeed at, but knew it would be a huge challenge. I felt that if I wanted to make my dream a reality, I had to go ALL in, so I did. I took a chance, decided to make the leap, and made it happen.

Failure is not an obstacle when your heart is happiest chasing your dream and working hard to achieve your goals. I have found the strength to try and try again, to learn and grow, and to trust my path.

Tell us about some of your biggest responsibilities as a business owner!

My biggest responsibility as a female entrepreneur in my field of work is setting an example for other women who want to follow my same career path. I want to educate those who started just like me, I want to encourage others to embrace their differences, and inspire women to chase their dreams without comparing in a loving community. Coming from someone who struggled through school my whole life, but worked hard to get where I am today, I want to empower women to just GO FOR IT! If you want it, you can make it happen!

What keeps you motivated?

There are a few things that keep me motivated through the challenges of running my own business. One is being the positive and loving feedback I receive from clients and making them feel beautiful.

The second factor is building with such incredible people and growing those relationships even after we’ve worked together.

Third is just knowing that I am taking on a role in someone else’s life to capture special memories for them to keep and share for a lifetime. I also have the opportunity to help others grow in their businesses and watch them succeed through mentoring. I am constantly surrounded by joyful celebrations and loving people. The people keep me motivated and their stories always inspire me.

How do you balance it all and keep things in perspective?

There is a key to maintaining a positive work/life balance, and that’s sacrifice. It might look like I’m just doing it all, but the truth is, I can’t and I don’t.

Sacrifice is a huge part of balance in your personal life and your business world. You must create balance in order to be happy, maintain relationships, and enjoy life. When you’re balancing, you’re also giving up one thing for another.

I choose to do what I can to make my clients happy, but also choose to put my family and my health at the forefront. I have learned to sacrifice some “fun time” here and there and use that time towards work. I have also learned to sacrifice time that I could accomplish something for my business, but instead spend that quality time with my husband.

Being open and honest with clients, in a professional manner, is the best way to go about any situation. This allows you to prioritize in your personal life, but also continue to give a positive client experience. My work schedule might take over quite a bit of my time, because it’s certainly no normal 9-5 job, but I make it a priority to be conscious of the time being spent with my husband, family, and friends.

What are your favorite tools to stay productive and organized?

In order to stay focused and productive throughout the day, I am constantly updating my to-do list and prioritizing those tasks. I live by my daily to-do lists, but also set my weekly goals and have a set schedule for the week!

I am definitely a planner, so a week without a plan just isn’t possible. My meetings, photoshoots, editing days, travel days, and anything else going on is always scheduled at least a few weeks in advance. This way I know exactly what needs to get done for the week/month and my agenda is organized!

A huge key to remaining focused on my days in the office is to give my brain a break every once in a while. It’s good to step back from the computer, take a walk, go to lunch, and just give my mind a rest.

Treating myself after a long day or a difficult situation also helps relieve stress and allows me to reset my attitude for another positive day!

My all time favorite tool to keep organized is Dubsado! I keep this website updated with clients sessions, contacts, invoices, contracts, notes, a calendar, forms, etc. I also can’t live without pretty agendas! I love keeping my agenda open on my desk at all times. When I update my digital calendar, I also update my agenda so that I am double organized and confirmed!

What piece of advice would you give to other female entrepreneurs or women reading this blog?

There are a few secrets I’ve learned, in my short time as an entrepreneur, in order to succeed as an entrepreneur and maintain a happy life.

First, like I always say, just go for it! If you want to take steps to living your dreams, just go for it and don’t be afraid! It’s okay to do what you need to do in order to get where you want to be. As long as you’re working hard, setting goals, and making it happen, you are on your way!

Second, be your own cheerleader. Don’t depend on anyone else to create your own happiness and to chase your dreams. There are people who might want to discourage you for whatever reason, but you need to be the reason to keep moving forward. Find your inspiration, find your community, and be your own cheerleader every step of the way.
And finally, define your own success. Someone else’s definition of success might be totally different than yours. Embrace your different qualities, be your own person, don’t be afraid of being unique, stop comparing, and find out what success means to you. Just because someone else is “doing it all” doesn’t mean they are happy doing it or that you would be happy in their shoes. In my opinion, your happiness, fulfillment, and purpose is the most important part of being a successful entrepreneur. Remember why you’re doing what you’re doing and find the heart behind it all!

Remy,

I love your servant heart and your passion for photography!!!  Your light and smile truly lights up a room and I can't wait to see where this business takes you next. You're going to do amazing things, girl!
